• Ended  anti-union Right to Work laws and supported high paying union jobs across our state

• Led the conversation in Lansing surrounding economic mobility, ensuring no industry is left behind by technological and economic advances

• Won investments in local, high-growth industries

Moving forward, we need to: 

• Expand workforce development and access programs to residents across the state, regardless of ZIP code

• Recognize the contributions of the arts and creative industries to Michigan’s economy, and continue to support and invest in this vital sector 

• Deliver high-speed internet to every home and close the gap in digital access

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and a major driver of local job growth. While federal, state, and local support has helped, small businesses continue to face significant challenges: staff retention, supply chain constraints, and rising operating costs. To support entrepreneurship, innovation, and small business growth, during her first term in Lansing, Sue: 

• Led efforts to  strengthen Michigan’s Business Improvement Zones, supporting vibrant communities and driving economic growth across the state

• Coordinated with community partners to develop programs to create more opportunities for entrepreneurs to start and grow healthy businesses 

• Expanded public transportation to provide workers and consumers with more affordable, reliable access to businesses

Moving forward, we will: 

• Make sure that small businesses have the tools and resources they need to prosper in our changing economy

• Expand access to technical assistance and grant opportunity programs for businesses throughout Michigan 

Sue served on the board of economic development incubator Ann Arbor SPARK! and is committed to connecting existing and newer businesses with technical support, networking resources, grant opportunities, and other tools to succeed. Sue is a reliable voice for small businesses because she knows that when entrepreneurs have a chance to innovate, create jobs, and serve, the possibilities by which we can strengthen our communities are truly limitless.

As the daughter  of a proud union family, Sue will forever be grateful for her mother’s  union that helped their family through tough times. Sue has consistently been a reliable voice for workers and organized labor in the Senate. In just her first term, Sue:

• Expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit, the biggest tax cut for working Michiganders in a generation

• Ensured worker protections were included in Michigan’s energy legislation

• Helped end Right to Work in Michigan, putting power back into the hands of labor and working people

If re-elected, we will continue to: 

• Fight for Affordable and Accessible Childcare options 

• Support Earned Family leave and Sick leave, safe working conditions, and collective bargaining 

• Connect high schoolers with Career Technical Training, two-and-four year colleges, and Apprenticeship programs 

• Fight for broadened hybrid pensions for correctional, conservation and other state officers

Sue is a proven champion for labor and working people, earning the endorsement of labor unions throughout her career in public service. She understands that strong unions are essential to Michigan’s economic success and will continue fighting for working Michiganders.

As a longtime sustainability leader and environmental champion, Sue knows protecting our natural resources is essential to maintaining the Michigander way of life and bolstering local economies. The climate crisis isn’t a distant threat—it’s an urgent policy priority that demands action now. That’s why in Lansing, she has already: 

• Helped spearhead a new clean energy plan to establish long awaited clean and renewable energy standards, increase energy efficiency targets, and expand the role of the Michigan Public Services Commission in reaching these goals

• Sponsored legislation to expand the use of virtual power plants, improving energy efficiency and grid reliability while lowering energy costs and  improving environmental outcomes

• Sponsored legislation requiring the Michigan Public Services Commission to consider their impact on climate and equity, while increasing the ability of local residents to advocate for the  well-being of Michigan communities

In the next term, we plan to: 

• Fight for a fair, inclusive transition to a renewable energy economy that creates good paying jobs and prioritizes justice for communities that have been most impacted by poverty, pollution, and catastrophic weather

• Keep Michigan on track to have 100% clean energy by 2040

Michiganders can grow our economy while decreasing carbon emissions.

Everyone who calls our state home should have access to clean drinking water and clean air to breathe — period. As an attorney with a masters in Resource Use and Planning from the University of Michigan, Sue has worked on sustainability and water quality issues for over 30 years.  She is committed to protecting our natural resources and vibrant ecosystems so that every family can live healthily and happily, today, tomorrow, and in the far future. Sue’s legislative record speaks to this priority, including: 

• Sponsoring multiple pieces of legislation to assess current microplastic contamination of watersheds and to mitigate further contamination

• Passing legislation setting up systems to aid in community waste control efforts

• Sponsoring a bill that would allow the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to reduce PFAS contamination of our waterways

Going forward, we will: 

• Increase soil health and increase tools for landowners to conserve their land for generations to come

• Make sure polluters are held accountable for their pollution and public health impacts 

Together, Sue wants to ensure every Michigander can live well, thrive, and build a long future in Michigan, no matter where they are.

Farmers are incredible contributors to our economy and prosperity in Michigan. As both a farmer and a conservationist, Sue is a proven leader on land preservation and conservation efforts, and a strong voice for our rural communities and farmers. When it comes to farms and farmers, Sue’s has already worked to: 

• Grant tax cuts to farmers who implement conservation easements on their land, supporting both our farmers and our environment

• Pass the Natural Area Preservation Program, which levies a major millage program to invest in natural area and agricultural conservation easements

Together, we will keep working towards: 

• Actively connecting family farmers to both technical and financial resources as a way to promote greater conservation efforts

• Empowering small and mid-size farms and expanding the pathway to land ownership, promoting more responsible environmental stewardship, minimizing potential pollution risks, and keeping our community healthily fed

• Expanding workforce development, industry resource, government services, and agricultural education to support the agricultural workforce 

Sue understands that access to local farmland is important for food security, and together, Sue knows we can grow —pun intended— our local agriculture economy.

Across the state, too many of our neighbors hesitate to go to a doctor when they are sick for fear of not being able to afford treatment. Families are squeezed by rising costs, deciding between paying for life-saving drugs or putting food on the table. This is woefully unacceptable. Sue firmly believes that healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. For a healthier Michigan, Sue has: 

• Helped pass legislation to rescind protections on pharmaceutical manufacturers liability on medicine that has harmed or killed Michigan residents - the only law of its kind in the country

• Worked to help establish the Hamilton Health Care Center in Whitmore Lake, ensuring health access in an underserved community

• Kept Michiganders safe by taking decisive action against gun violence, working to pass an 11 bill package to mitigate gun violence by implementing universal background checks, extreme risk protection orders, and child access protection laws

Moving forward, we are going to: 

• Continue expanding access to mental, physical, and behavioral health treatments and procedures to Michiganders regardless of zip code

• Keep cutting costs to prescription drugs and life-saving medicines to make sure every Michigander can get the pharmaceuticals they need to be happy and healthy

• Ensure adequate funding for our local health and mental health providers, elevating awareness for existing programs, and expanding services that can help Michigan families and senior citizens address their healthcare and human services needs

Sue will never stop working until every Michigander has access to high-quality, affordable physical and mental health care.

Sue understands the challenges facing families because she has lived them. Our neighbors are feeling increasingly pinched as the cost of living and everyday necessities — from gas and groceries, to housing and childcare — continue to rise. Meanwhile, corporate profits are higher than ever. We have to make living more affordable for working families. Sue has addressed cost of living through: 

• The Prescription Drug Affordability Task Force, which works to lower prescription drug costs for Michiganders

• Expanding programs for Pre-K for all, after-school activities, and childcare, saving families up to $45,000/year

• Supporting millions in funding for affordable housing

• Investing in apprenticeship, vocational, and career technical programs, connecting graduating high schoolers with good paying jobs

If Sue is re-elected, we will: 

• Tackle the rising cost of the house market to make home ownership more attainable

• Work to improve wages and decrease auto insurance rates

• Preserve housing access for senior and legacy citizens driven away by the affordability crisis

Together, with Sue, we can work to make sure every Michigander can access the housing, goods, and services they need at a price they can afford and a level of comfort they can enjoy.

For decades, Sue has been on the frontlines of multiple civil rights battles. In the face of extremist efforts to roll back our rights, Sue continues to be a steadfast protector of hard-won freedoms. Some of the fights Sue has already won in Lansing are: 

• An expansion of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to provide protections from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression

• A major juvenile justice reform project that gave indigent youth proper representation during appeals

• A budget restructuring in the Department of Corrections and Michigan Court System that not only enables fiscal responsibility but prioritizes community safety and justice

Looking ahead, we will: 

• Ardently defend reproductive freedom and the right to make one’s own medical decisions

• Ensure everyone is welcome in Michigan communities, no matter who they are or where they come from

• Protect queer members of the community

Sue is an unapologetic fighter for ALL Michiganders, no matter who they are or what identities they claim. 

A mom of three kids, Sue knows the power of education as the key to unlocking opportunity. Our children are our future, and with quality education, they can be given the tools and resources to succeed and thrive. In this fight, Sue: 

• Helped pass the largest public education budget on record for two years in a row, ensuring free breakfast and lunch for all students without raising taxes

• Increased investment in high-impact tutoring to help kids reach their potential, saving thousands on private tutors

• Safeguarded funding for our flagship education institutions

But there is more work to be done: 

• Prioritize smart investments in our schools, including in the arts and vocational education

• Increase both teacher pay and per-pupil funding to support educational communities and fight the teacher shortage

• Help bridge the in-school digital divide to ensure every family, regardless of  ZIP code, can access the modern technologies our most advanced educational institutions thrive upon

Sue will continue to be a champion for our kids and for public education.
